PROMED is a Panamanian company specialized in the Medical, Industrial, and Research sectors. Founded more than 50 years ago, it has a presence in Panama, Central America, and the Caribbean.
PROMED has a broad catalog of solutions that includes the sale of medical supplies, equipment, and services to various hospitals and institutions across the region.
Over the years, PROMED has maintained its market leadership thanks to the business units and tactical groups that perform strategic, highly professional work in the organization's sales, technical-service, and administration areas.
As an organization focused on technological innovation and with a regional presence, PROMED needed to speed up its process of accessing information from different sources in order to meet business needs.
PROMED has various source systems from which it must extract data, centralize it, and present the requested information in the shortest possible time.
That is how PROMED, with the support of IVCISA as an AWS Advanced Partner, decided to begin the Data Lake project to define the strategy that would meet the organization's needs.
Achieving immediate access to all data and the ability to centralize the different data sources were the main challenges PROMED sought to solve in 2022.
As Miguel A. Valzania, PROMED's Project Lead for the Data Lake, explained, the organization had several source systems where good data structuring and quality were needed at extraction (CRM, production database, WMS) and where data had to be delivered optimally to business and administrative groups.
The initial process involved connecting the production database to another database through a DMS, and from there all the production information was migrated to an external database for data analytics. However, all of this took longer than expected and did not incorporate all possible best practices.
Taking all these requirements into account, the Data Lake project began with IVCISA as the specialized AWS partner that supported the strategy to centralize all the data generated by its applications and enable users to visualize it in the shortest possible time, incorporating best practices and better information quality—essential for effective decision-making.
“With IVCISA we've had a growth experience, because they pushed us toward new services that weren't used within the organization—for example, AWS Glue and Amazon Redshift. They also helped us be more agile with the data and provide greater security for it.”
“We've obtained several benefits, because we're now able to provide information to users more easily, and it's more available and secure.
Now that it's in the AWS cloud, we no longer run security risks, and the production database is no longer accessed; instead, Amazon Redshift is accessed, which is designed specifically for everything related to analysis,” were the words of Project Lead Miguel Valzania as he explained the impact achieved with the Data Lake.
For PROMED, the results have been more than positive, achieving not only reduced information-delivery times but also improved data quality through AWS Glue.
On security, the company has established the necessary guidelines to safeguard its data and now provides each user with exactly the access they require, thanks to solutions such as Amazon Macie and AWS Security Hub.
For PROMED, the contribution provided by IVCISA as a specialized AWS partner has been valuable, because it has helped the company maximize and understand the value of the data it generated. Today, this new approach and the improvement with the Data Lake have also allowed it to provide quality information to its clients.
Among the services PROMED uses are:
“With IVCISA and the AWS Data Lake project, greater value has been given to data within the organization, because it has resulted in improved analytics and data availability for the organization's different groups.”
